The Yin and Yang of Health

Balance

The ancient Chinese principle of yin and yang conveys the balance, interconnectedness and complementary nature of opposites. Namely, the positive, active, yang energy (i.e. the sun) and the negative, receptive, yin energy (i.e. the earth).  When it comes to health and longevity, the concept of yin and yang has guided civilisations from China to Japan, to ancient Greece and Egypt.  In the East, the basic premise incorporates the idea that the body is a garden requiring careful cultivation. Experimenting with such ancient principles in order to nurture one’s health, is both simple and easy, and results can be transformative.

Food combining

Take for example, the ancient wisdom of food combining.  This remains an important tenet of health since protein and starch require entirely different digestive enzymes for proper digestion and elimination. Try eating protein only meals, accompanied with fresh, organic, cooked or raw vegetables.  Eat fruit alone between meals for optimal absorption of essential vitamins and minerals.  Both practices help to fine tune the digestive system, reduce inflammation and alleviate stress on the colon and vital organs.  There are many studies that demonstrate the correlation between a healthy digestive system and wellbeing, with common findings explained in this downloadable pdf. You are what you eat and good health relies on a healthy gut.

Fasting

Plutarch wrote “Instead of medicine, fast for a day”.  A fast or mini-fast is the perfect way to re-set and re-charge.  For example, a delicious one day or multi-day raw juice fast, supports the body in eliminating toxic waste, which may otherwise build up in the colon and silently leak into the bloodstream. To support the body’s natural elimination and cleansing processes, try consuming a pint a day of fresh, raw juice prepared at home. Use combinations of carrot, apple, celery, beetroot, cucumber, spinach, parsley and ginger. A fast can bring your body and being back into greater balance. Small habits repeated often can have life-enhancing effects.
