Perspectives: Contemporary Fine Art & Sculpture
Rachel Garrard, Enfolded, 2022, rock powder pigment on linen, 71 x 55 inches. Finding the Light in Dark Places collection.
Welcome to our inaugural feature in which we note the work of outstanding contemporary artists in fine art and sculpture.
Olivier van Herpt, Curves, 2018, Earthenware.
1) Olivier van Herpt (Sculpture)
Brought to life by a synthesis of man and machine, Olivier van Herpt sculpts exquisite objects in porcelain and clay, using a self-engineered 3D-printer. Stretching the boundaries of what is possible, van Herpt has succeeded in creating the first asymmetrical porcelain object exceeding one metre in height, to stunning effect. Van Herpt’s work is subtly futuristic and flowingly tactile. Objects that are the ideal accent for contemporary rooms. Van Herpt is based in Holland and exhibits worldwide.
2) Rachel Garrard (Multidiscipline)
Rachel Garrard’s geometric canvases gently depict both the mysterious properties of the universe and the insight of the artist, in a voyage that bridges the scientific and the esoteric. The compositions are a beautiful tonal palette of soft greys, golds, ochres, pinks and blues and greens, achieved by the use of ground quartz, ash and rock powder pigment. Garrard’s multidisciplinary approach explores such inherently natural phenomena via painting, sculpture, motion picture, performance, installation and holographic projection. The Devon-born artist divides her time between Mexico and New York and exhibits worldwide.
Zaina Alhizami, Heaven is a Place on Earth, 2023.
3) Zaina Alhizami (Fine Art)
Zaina Alhizami creates mixed-media, textural canvases exploring philosophical questions and biological forms, often with the use of vivid colour. Alhizami trained with local artisans in Tuscany for many years, whilst absorbing anatomical knowledge in great detail. The artist was drawn to practise depicting the eye and other physiological features ad infinitum, until the forms found their way into her mesmerisingly intricate pieces. Hailing from Kuwait, Alhizami creates her exquisite pieces from her West London-based studio. We first came across the work of Alhizami in 2020 shortly before the artist’s first solo exhibition, “Behind Closed Doors”.
We look forward to viewing future works, and to featuring the work of additional artists whose work is enriching and thrilling in equal measure, as is the case here.
